Small Business Saturday

Small Business Saturday is celebrated on the Saturday after Thanksgiving in the United States, and on the first Saturday in December in the U.K. In the U.S., this holiday is considered to be the middle portion of a trifecta of three shopping holidays which includes this holiday, Black Friday and Cyber Monday,. It is a day on which people are supposed to patronize small, brick and mortar businesses with their holiday shopping.

History

This holiday was created by American Express in 2010 and aggressively marketed it via social media, radio and National broadcasting. Today, it is a registered trademark of American Express. In 2013, the United Kingdom adopted their own Small Business Saturday after the success of the American holiday. The U.K holiday is celebrated on the first Saturday in December.

Customs, Traditions And Celebrations

Like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the main focus of this day is on shopping. On Black Friday, Americans are expected to hit the big chain stores and do their shopping. On Cyber Monday, citizens are expected to shop online and on this day, people are expected to visit the smaller brick and mortar stores—otherwise known as “mom and pop stores”.

However, while shopping is the main focus of this holiday, it is not a necessary component. People who want to acknowledge this day can do so promoting it on social media or by recommending your favorite small business to your friends and family
